Divestment / Reinvestment

One of the biggest challenges in moving to a low carbon economy, is to encourage investors to put their money into renewables, and take it out of fossil fuel companies.

Initiatives are under way in Scotland as well as many other countries to persuade the investment community to place more trust in renewable projects, such as community energy schemes, which can provide a steady return on investment over a period of 25 years or more.  This is referred to as “reinvestment”.

At the same time, campaigners are putting pressure on institutions such as universities, churches, and local government, to move their investments out of the fossil fuel sector.  This is “divestment”.

FoE Tayside is currently seeking to encourage local government investment in renewable energy projects.
